The Rathaus, seat of the Mayor and City Council. The building looks a bit like a church – the Council was always in conflict with the Archbishop, so they built a small tower next to the city hall as a symbol of the council’s pride and independence.
This was also the center of the Roman settlement which was founded here in the 1st century B.C. And in Medieval times, the Jewish ghetto used to be right next to the City Hall. The Jews were expelled during the Plague epidemics (15th century) and the Ghetto destroyed, only scarce remains have been recovered.
