The 22 Apostle Islands scatter into Lake Superior at the tip of the Bayfield Peninsula. 21 of the islands are preserved as wilderness in Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, which also includes shoreline on the mainland. Tour boats help visitors see historic lighthouses and sea caves.
