Venice, an extraordinarily wealthy, powerful, and cosmopolitan city, was a center of the arts and music. During the sixteenth century and into the burgeoning baroque, it reached a cultural pinnacle. Festive and ceremonial polychoral canzoni by G. Gabrieli, Viadana, toccate and ritornelli by Monteverdi, balli by Mainerio, Dalza, Allegri and Zanetti, and sonate by Marini, Bendinelli are deftly played by EM/NY instrumentalists %u2013 sackbuts, cornettos, theorbos, Italian double harp, Renaissance guitar, bagpipes, shawm and a band of violins as heard on EM/NY%u2019s recent compact disc release %u2013 San Marco echoes
