Dr. Richard Long, Emory dance scholar and historian Emeritus, will present a lecture about three extraordinary American women devoted to Asian dance who emerged during the 1920s. Each traveled to the East to study with indigenous masters of the art of dance. They eventually wrote an account which serves as a contribution to the corpus of dance scholarship. Interestingly, all three were known primarily by an adopted pseudonym. The subjects of this survey are Xenia Zarina (Classic Dances of the Orient), Ragini Devi (Dance Dialects of India), and La Meri (Dance Out the Answer).
