Mount Tamalpais (pronounced tammel-PIE-us), or Mt Tam for short, is a distinctive 2,571 foot mountain just north of San Francisco. A state park covers the mountain’s southern and western flanks, completely encircling Muir Woods National Monument. The state park has redwood trees of its own, along with a great variety of plant and animal life at different elevations and microclimates. A small parcel of parkland surrounds Mt Tam’s summit as well.
