The San Juan River below the large Navajo Reservoir in New Mexico is one of the best tailwater fisheries in the world. A steady flow of 40-50 degree water from the bottom of the massive Navajo Dam provides clear, nutrient-rich water for many fat and fast-growing rainbows and browns. The tailwaters provide a rare combination of cold water in a very arid (and warm in the summer) climate. The best fishing is in the special regulations area that extends some 3 miles below the dam. Sections of the river are wadeable, but the best way to experience the San Juan is to float it. Midges are a mainstay here year-round, but the San Juan also boasts some healthy hatches, BWO, caddis, PMD… The scenery is excellent, adding to the allure of the river, however, don’t expect a wilderness experience at this popular, almost touristy fly fishing destination.
