The Lehigh River isn’t well known, but it is a fine float-tripping and wading destination. The Lehigh takes on a number of personalities, from tannic Pocono stream, to rugged white water, to relatively placid as it runs some 70 miles from northeastern PA to its confluence with the Delaware at Easton.
The Waypoint highlighted here is the Glen Onoko access point/parking lot, a good place to start a float trip, if you can handle class II rapids.
The Lehigh suffered for years as it was harnessed for coal and timber transport. But all of the old dams are gone, and there is now plenty of wilderness drainage feeding this brawny river. And after coming back for many years, its bouldery bottom now harbors plenty of big and scrappy brown trout. If you don’t want to float trip, you can find quieter stretches suitable for wading, especially in lower-water periods. Here are some good links:
