IF there is a monument to the British football supporter, it is Roots Hall, for here is a ground built initially almost entirely through the efforts of a small, but dedicated group of people.
Roots Hall was intended to hold 35,000 spectators, but the highest attendance it has seen was 31,033 in January 1979 when Liverpool were visitors in the third round of the FA Cup. Despite the grounds relative modernity when designed, under the Safety of Sports Ground Act in 1985 the authorities reduced its capacity considerably from 27,000 to approx 11,000, including 2,651 seats. The ground became all seater in 1994 and the capacity is now 12,392.
