Wistman’s Wood is a grove a miniature oaks, on the right bank of the West Dart River. Wistman is probably derived from Celtic whist “eerie” and maen stone: Many granite rocks are strewn among the trees, and these are said to be houses and caverns of trolls and pixies living there.

How to get there: See Crockern Tor, the footpath that goes through the henge will take you right above the wood. Note that you should not walk into the oak forest: This is a protected area, and the moss and lichen here are a very sensitive habitat.
