Sheeps Tor is a rocky creek, towering above the Burrator Reservoir. On the southern tip of the Tor, there is a small cleft beneath some boulders of granite. This was said to be the entrance to the Pixies’ (or Piskies) House. The Pixies myth seems to be connected with the expelling or even extermination of the aboriginal population of the island, who were driven away by the Celts and probably used hide-outs like this.
Walking up Sheeps Tor is thoroughly recommended: The panomara is extraordinary, but don’t expect too much from the Pixies’ House. It’s just a small, damp and dark hole with a muddy floor. The entrance used to be much bigger, but it seems that the boulders have moved over time, and crawling inside is not recommended.
How to get there: Lots of parking spaces around Burrator, especially a great parking area on the eastern side. From there, just walk up to Sheeps Tor which is clearly visible, and the footpaths are signposted. Pixies’ House in the southern tip.
