Balboa mainly traveled through the Caribbean Sea and the gulf of Urbana from 1502 to 1510. On September 29, 1513 he claimed the Pacific Ocean for all the shores for Spain. In 1509, the first Spanish expedition to the mainland of South Africa left Hispaniola. He traveled 650 miles of ocean to get from San Sebastian and 4,200 miles of ocean in the entire expedition.
