Why this is called “The Watching Place”, nobody knows. Officially, this crossing is called Beetor Cross. But probably, this was a place where highwaymen lay in wait for their prey. Other stories have it that this is a place where convicted men where hanged in a cage.
Anyway, this place is said to be haunted by a cloaked and hooded figure, seemingly mourning next to the signpost which marks the crossing.
The place is easy to find: The yellow street here is the B3212 between Postbridge and Moretonhampstead. Watch out for the signs to Widecombe. The Watching Place is marked by a cross of stone (which does not seem to have any connection to the haunt).
