The Tunhill Kistvaen (a.k.a Blackslade) is what’s left of a tomb dating back to the Bronze Age. All that can be seen today are four granite slabs forming a rectangle. But here, a tinner called Jan Reynolds is said to have made a pact with a sinister stranger: He sold his soul for a couple of lucky years at gambling. Seven years later, he was carried away while sleeping through a service a the church in Widecombe, a few miles to the north of the spot.
Up to this day, sinister spirits are said to lure weak and foolhardy souls down here to renew the pact and replenish their forces …
