The Tunhill Kistvaen (also called Blackslade Kistvaen) consists of just four granite slabs forming a rectangle – the poor remains of what must have been the tomb of a Bronze Age warrior.
But this desolate spot is said to be the place where one Jan Reynolds sold his soul to a hooded stranger, for a few lucky years in gambling. After his streak of luck was over his was carried away on a huge black horse, while sleeping through a sunday service in nearby Widecombe’s church.
Up to this day, the area round the Kistvaen is said to be haunted by evil spirits waiting for persons foolhardy and greedy enough to close a deal with.
