Dewerstone Rock

created by  claus

Description

Dewerstone Rock is one of the most spectacular places to go in the moor: A rugged mass of rock towering over a narrow valley. Dewer is an old name for the devil, but many of the legends about the devil are in fact Christianized versions of ancient Norse sagas of Odin and his flock of wild horsemen and hounds. Dewerstone Rock is said to be the destination of the hounds and horses wild challenge across the moor. There are accounts of wild baying and thundering hoofs coming from Dewerstone, and many lone walkers are reported as having fallen from the cliff’s edge.

Not far from Dewerstone there’s Cadover Bridge (you have to park your car there if you want to walk to the rock), also a haunted place. It’s said that some kind of war was taking place here (cad is Celtic for battle), and in some nights you can still hear the clanging of steel and the cries of warriors.
