Local people don’t seem to be good at maths, because the Nine Maidens (a.k.a Nine Stones) are a circle of seventeen stones. But legend says that in counting the stones you never arrive at the same number twice, anyway.
This circle is all that remains of a tomb structure dating back to the Bronze Age. There are several legends surrounding this area, and all are related to tales of witchery. As nine is a black magic number (the witch Hecate has nine lives, just like a cat ), this may explain where the name comes from. “Maiden” may be a corruption of Celtic maen, which means stone.
However, one local legend says that the stones here are the petrified remains of nine young village girls who dared dance on a Sabbath.
Some new pagan cults consider this a sacred place and gather here for the celebration of equinox, solstice and Halloween.
