The village of Lydford, some miles to the west of this spot, used to have a very large parish, also incorporating some lonely farms right in the middle of the Dartmoor. These people had to carry their dead all the way to the cemetary in Lydford to bury them. The path they walked on was called the Lych Path, and some parts of it can still be retraced in the area. Now, walking all through the moor while carrying a coffin is an arduous task. To have it a bit easier people carried the corpses on horseback and made the coffin bearers wait here, in that little piece of wood which was a good meeting point. Obviously, some souls of the dead didn’t like this rough treatment because in some nights the flicker of light can be seen through the trees, and sometimes whispering noises can be heard.
