Description

This is not really a haunted place, but one that is associated with a myriad of local legends. It is actually a very ancient reservoir structure, and there is some evidence which points to some kind of industrial use doing the era of medieval tin mining.
The name “crazy well” seems to point to some pagan tradition: Quite possibly, this place was once seen as a sacred source.

However, according to local tradition Crazywell is a bottomless pit (in fact, it’s only 15 ft. deep), and its waters rise and fall with the tide of the sea at Plymouth (which of course is not true, but the pond does fill rather rapidly during heavy rain).

Piers Gaveston, the lover of king Edward II (14th century), supposedly went to Dartmoor when the king was forced to expel him from the court of London. A local legend says that he met a witch here who promised him that soon his head would be held high. On that promise, he returned to London only to face execution – yes, you guessed it, he was beheaded.
