Another suicidal story (see also Hangman’s Pit), this time one of unhappy love: George Stephens was a young man from the nearby village of Peter Tavy, living some time during the 18th century. Different stories are told as to why he poisoned himself. Some say he was betrayed by his girl friend, others claim her parents rejected him.
As he had to be buried outside the village, this remote location was chosen for his shallow grave. But some people claim that he cannot find rest: In some nights, a pale skeleton sits on top of the small plinth of stone that marks his grave, sometimes the figure is seen to be running to and fro, as if searching the way home, and even uttering wild cries of pain and grief.
