Jay's Grave

Description

And yet another suicidal story: Kitty Jay was an orphan working on a farm in nearby Manaton. She became pregnant, and when her lover abandoned her, she hanged herself in the barn. As was the custom, she had to be buried in the open countryside.

A couple of decades later, the story was almost forgotten, and some people claimed that the grave contained not human bones but animal remains. A local historian excavated the side, found the skeleton of a female person and decided to set up a proper grave.

There are two stories associated with the spot. The most famous one is probably down to a hoax: A local writer claimed that she repeatedly found flowers on the grave and that supernatural forces were behind this. It’s rather likely, though, that she placed the flowers there by herself. Still, she started some kind of tradition, and today it’s mostly tourists who bring flowers to this lonely spot.

But there is a second story which tells of a kneeling figure close to the grave, quite obviously mourning. It’s not quite sure whether the figure is of a man or of a woman but most witnesses say that it is not Kitty Jay.
