Hamburg’s AOL Arena (f.k.a Volksparkstadion) was the first Bundesliga stadium to feature the name of a commercial sponsor. It is frequently used for international matches and already hosted a couple of games during the 1974 edition of the world cup.
The home team, Hamburger SV (or simply HSV), is the only team participating in every season of the Bundesliga since its inauguration in 1963. Before the Bundesliga was set up and the first stage of the German championship was made up of regional rounds, HSV was famous for winning every single North German postwar championship bar one.
The smaller local rivals, FC St Pauli, also spent a couple of seasons in the Bundesliga. St Pauli has its own home ground, the small but evocative Millerntor ground (capacity 21,000), but switch to the AOL Arena for local derbies vs HSV or highly-attended matches against prestigious teams.
