Kaiserslautern is the smallest town to host world cup matches (pop. 100,000). In fact, were it not for its soccer team, most people would never have heard of the place.

However, the local stadium, situated on a hill overlooking the city, is one of the legendary places in German football: The audience at the Betzenberg (or locally, the “Betze”) is among the most passionate and partisan in Germany.

The Kaiserslautern soccer team first rose to prominence in the 1950’s when some of its players formed the backbone of the German national squad. Fritz Walter, after whom the stadium is named today, is Germany’s most popular footballer, next to Franz Beckenbauer (Bayern Munich) and Uwe Seeler (Hamburger SV): He captained the “heroes of Berne” team that won Germany’s first World Cup in 1954. Fun fact: Because he was said to excel when weather conditions were rather ghastly, a rainy day and a wet pitch are still called “Fritz Walter weather”.
