Nuremberg’s soccer team (known locally simply as “the Club”) used to be Germany’s most succesful team once: In 1968 they won the German championship for the ninth time, establishing a record that lasted for that lasted for 18 years, until it was equalled by none other than Bavarian rivals Bayern M%uFFFDnchen (which have since progressed to raise the tally to 19 titles).
But Nuremberg’s is also famous for a curious fact: After their last title win in 1968, they became the first (and so far only) German team to suffer relegation in a season following a championship win. Since then, the club’s fortunes have been far from stable, and at times they have been one of the so-called “elevator teams” (teams that get promoted and relegated in several consecutive seasons). Currently, they are playing Bundesliga soccer again but struggling – as usual in recent years.
The second division team from the neighboring city of F%uFFFDrth has also used the Frankenstadion for a few home matches.
