Late 2001 – Early 2002 The approach into this field is a little trickier than most, at least trickier than most approaches outside of Alaska. To get there you had to fly over the water through some narrow valleys and talk on the Radio a lot to make sure there wasn’t a plan coming around the same corner from the other direction as you worked your way in.
At the time I went there were some strict radio procedures as well due to the beginning of the War on Terror and the value of Valdez to the nation. Once you get to the end of the valley you can see that there isn’t a whole heck of a lot room to maneuver a relatively large plane around either.
As in most of Alaska the folks there were real friendly.
