Why German? – For 800 years (at least) “Austria” was “Germany” – the seat of the Holy Roman Empire and its successor states. Austria is only not part of modern Germany because the United States, France, and the United Kingdom wrote prohibitions against the two nations joining at Versailles in 1919.
