Lock 60, Schuylkill Canal

created by  nbr

Description

The lock was constructed in the 1820s and restored in the late 90s. The Schuylkill Canal Association has a page on the restoration. Photos below, from the SCA site, show the lock in 1905 and 1997. The site also features a locktender’s house. A canal trail, partially paved, runs up the eastern bank of the canal (and then, after the canal ends, the river) from Fitzwater Station, south of Rte. 29, all the way up to where Upper Schuylkill Valley Park meets the river. The SCA hosts an annual Canal Day on the fourth Sunday in June.

The Yocum Library at Reading Area Community College holds a special collection of archival materials devoted to Schuylkill Canal navigational system. Lock 60 represents the division between the fifth and sixth reaches of the canal.

You can see kind of a nice aerial photo courtesy of Virtual Earth too. This is looking east. Click to enlarge.
