The Mayflower Restaurant & Pub at 247 Elgin Street (613-238-3731) is a slightly down-market, quiet, discreet place to have a sandwich or a drink in the back pub. The Mayflower II was a popular drinking spot when I arrived in Ottawa in early 2006 but it closed shortly after the Conservatives took office in February. The Mayflower II, which was right across the street from Hy’s on Queen Street, was very popular with lots of Conservatives while they were in Opposition. Many of those who kept it in business last year are now in cabinet and we never see them out anymore. The closing of the Mayflower II, we believe, is the most visible sign that Conservatives are no longer any fun. :)
