Directed by Pastor Charles Johnson, Way Maker Ministries is the largest private non-profit summer meals program sponsor in New Orleans. They have served as a sponsor for four years, averaging 16-18 sites per year comprised of both faith-based and community-based organizations. Rather than using a vendor for meals, they prepare their own to distribute to sites all across the New Orleans metro area. This summer they plan to not only serve as many sites as previous years, but plan to increase the number of sites in order to meet the increased need which exists now that the two local school districts (New Orleans and Jefferson Parish) will not be serving sites as in previous years. Some of their biggest needs for this upcoming summer will be for funds to purchase additional equipment and support the rising cost of transporting meals. A recent grant from Share Our Strength will help support additional sites and help Way Maker Ministries provide an estimated total of 100,000 meals to children this summer.
