Description

Quetzaltrekkers Nicaragua

The volcano with a view of three countries After breakfast in the office we leave León for a six hour bus ride to the most western point of Nicaragua, where a peninsula created by volcán Cosigüina stretches out into the Golfo Fonseca. Volcán Cosigüina once was the tallest volcano in Central America. Until in 1835 during a powerful explosive eruption it blew of its top. Ashes of the explosion fell as far as Mexico, Costa Rica and Jamaica. When we arrive we set up camp in a village and have lunch. We walk to a nearby beach, go for a swim and watch a beautiful sunset. The beaches are nesting grounds for turtles so in the right season we go to the beach at night to look for turtles. Next morning, after packing our stuff and having breakfast we take a bus to where we start the hike. The area is lush and green and filled with wildlife, and is one of the last places on the Pacific Coast where the Scarlet Macaw can be found in the wild. On slowly ascending trails we make our way to the top. The crater is incredible, it has a diameter of more then 2 km and 500 meters below the edge you see a huge crater lake. From the top views are offered over Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, Golfo de Fonseca and the Pacific Ocean. We walk along the edge of part of the crater have lunch and then go down to the village where we camp. In the village we take a refreshing dive in a hot spring that by the community is turned into a nice swimming pool. At night we have dinner in a local comedor.
