Description

Atlanta, GA Printmaking

Web site

The works I create are linocuts, images printed by hand from linoleum blocks. All of my linocuts are original prints. An original print is taken from a block or a plate that was conceived and created to be printed. Each image is developed with the idea that it will eventually be printed multiple times to produce an edition. Each time the block is inked and printed on the press an original work of art is produced.

My subject matter is taken from the urban landscape, often depicting older buildings and street scenes, with particular attention paid to signage. They offer us a glimpse of our past, previous to the wave of franchising that homogenized much of every day commerce across America.

More than ten years ago, I began to document the scenes I had cherish growing up in the Atlanta area. Whether it was our family pilgrimage to Krispy Kreme, or anticipating a glimpse of the Bluebird Truck Stop signs from the back seat of the car, there is an element in my work that is deeply rooted in memory and nostalgia. At the hands of development and time, many of the great landmarks in our cities have all but disappeared. With the exception of theater marquees, most commercial signs have not evoked enough community nostalgia to be spared or restored I hope that my prints will foster an appreciation for the craftsmanship that is gradually disappearing from our roadsides and street corners.
