I was once asked the question, %u201CWould you say your paintings are cathartic?%u201D I answered the question with a hesitant, %u201Cno,%u201D but have since realized that I was and am working through and exorcising the events of not just my personal history, but the history of my mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great great-grandmother, etc. I focus my pieces on issues of navigating through, and better understanding the identity one is assigned or chooses. I find that it is easier to work through my cultural history by being both literal and cryptic at the same time. In my paintings I use the body, a symbol we can all derive some meaning from, ideographic symbols to express my thoughts. I was born in Warren, OH, but raised here in Birmingham. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Art from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and since graduating I have taught for and with various local organizations including Space One Eleven and the Y.W.C.A.
