Growing up in Cleveland, my mother and grandmother taughtme the joy of being creative and working with my hands. That creativity evolved into fascination with many mediums until I discovered mosaic in 1996. Subsequently I had the privilege to study the ancient method of making mosaic in Ravenna and Venice, Italy. Those techniques are the basis of my contemporary designs.

Glass, one of my favorite materials, is composed of heated silica sand, iron, soda ash, Limestone, and potassium. Often called the %u201Cfourth state of matter,%u201D it is neither liquid or solid. The diverse colors are the result of various mineral additions rather than surface stains, producing a palette ranging from grainy, muted neutrals to highly reflective and intensely bright chromas. Add to glass any material available%u2026paper, metal, mirror, stone and found objects, and you have materials that provide inspiration and come together in my mosaic designs. Mosaic lends itself to both large and small scale, two and three dimensional pieces.

Hand-cut fragments (tesserae) are thoughtfully placed to create the illusion of depth and to enliven the design. Everything comes to life in bright light.
