Photography

My training in the field of architecture was what sparked my interest in light. I was taught to see form reduced to a canvas of light. Photography is simply another way to explore methods of capturing its effects.

All of the information in a black and white photograph comes from light and darkness. My photography focuses on that simple idea, and my quest to fully explore its implications. I choose to do my work in this way mostly because it isolates this spectrum of contrast. I take pictures of objects and buildings, but the subject of the photograph is not always as important as the play of light on it. In the shadow of light is darkness, and it is the place where the two meet that gives the form, space and texture to my pictures. The quality of light on a stationary object is always changing; changing with the seasons, time of day, and the weather. To catch a moment of that natural, changing light is to capture a whole spectrum of contrasts that will never occur again.

I develop all of my black and white photographs in a darkroom. There is something unique and fulfilling in producing an image, in being fully involved and in control of the process. With that said, there is little alteration done to these images %u2013 what I see in my camera is pretty much what you see in a photograph. It%u2019s simple and unprocessed, but I like that %u2013 I think that the world around us is full of beauty and intrigue, and photography is my way of communicating that.
