Las CaƱadas is the name of the natural reserve surrounding the peak of the Teide, Spain’s highest mountain at over 12,000 feet.
It’s probably one of the most lunar and spectacular landscapes, filled with rocks in all kinds of shapes, sizes and colours. Parts of Planet of the Apes have been filmed here.
There’s a telecabin going from the base of the Teide at about 7,700 ft up to about 1,000 feet below the peak. (The peak itself can only be visited with a permit which is available for free in the island’s capital Santa Cruz.) On a clear day, this is one of the most spectacular vistas in the world and you can see almost all of the Canary islands from here.
