18th and Castro has been considered the center of the gay world since the late 1970s. It has gone through many changes since then; the community has fought to preserve ;ocal businesses as chains move in, and gentrification threatens to make living in the Castro unaffordable for most gays. Yet as the symbolic center of the gay universe, 18th and Castro has endured into the 21st century.
