Studio-en is the working home of artist, Ian Philip Momsen. Located on the corner of Hawthorne and 21st Avenue in southeast Portland, Oregon, Studio-en functions not only as a work space but also as a gallery where various local and international artists display their work.
Although a Universal idea, en refers to the concept of cause and effect, and the role it plays in our everyday lives. Presently, as one moment follows another, our actions are directly or indirectly affected by previous circumstances. As these present moments unfold, they in turn affect future moments to come, again, directly or otherwise. This connectedness gives both meaning and purpose to our actions and in turn, demonstrates our relationship to our surroundings. On an even deeper level, en proposes that since each action is tied to another, no beginning or end exists in life.
Environment, therefore, plays a crucial role in the artist’s work. He or she who creates from thought rather than feel is one who has missed the point. Whatever subject an artist chooses, it must always be relative to his or her surroundings. It is impossible to do otherwise and create a work that will match in sincerity anything done at the artists immediate disposal.
